Musings...

Welcome to Musings, a space where I share thoughts, reflections, and glimpses into the heart of my creative journey. Here, you'll find the threads that weave together my love for storytelling, the catharsis of writing, and the deep, complex emotions that inspire my works.

These musings are not just about the worlds I create but also the moments that shape them—loss and love, resilience and hope, the beauty of diversity, and the courage to embrace life's scars. Whether it's a reflection on grief, a spark of inspiration, or a behind-the-scenes look at my stories, Musings is where heart and imagination meet.

I hope you find connection and meaning here. Thank you, once again, for joining me on this journey.

November Musings:

November is here, and while we’re not quite at the year’s end, it feels like the right time to pause and reflect on the journey so far. This year, writing has been a lifeline—a means of focusing my mind, lifting my spirit, and, perhaps most importantly, rediscovering the ability to have fun again.

Grief has a way of aging us, of making the world feel heavier and colder. Personally, it’s left me feeling far older than my years. But as George Bernard Shaw once said, "We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing." Writing has reminded me of the joy of creating, of imagining, and of playing. It has brought glimmers of light to my darkest days, helping me reclaim pieces of myself that I thought were lost forever.

As I continue to heal and write, I am learning that while grief changes us, it doesn’t have to define us. This journey has been far from easy, but it’s teaching me that even in the midst of sorrow, we can still find moments of joy, play, and purpose.

Here's to finding light even in the shadows.

December

The festive season, a time for joy and togetherness, can feel painfully hollow when you’re navigating grief. Glittering lights, cheerful songs, and bustling gatherings can serve as sharp reminders of who is missing, casting a shadow over the season’s glow.

For me, storytelling has become a lifeline—a way to give shape to emotions that feel too overwhelming to name. In one of my stories, a queen wrestles with the heartbreak of letting her daughter go to a magickal realm where she’ll find peace, even though it means they’ll never be together again. Writing her journey became a way to reflect on my own experiences of love and loss, and it reminded me that grief is just another way of holding onto love.

During the holidays, writing offers both refuge and connection. It allows us to explore our sadness, but also to honour the memories and moments that still bring warmth. Some of my favourite holiday stories are those that mix a little bittersweetness into the joy—they remind us that it’s okay to carry both sorrow and hope.

If you’re grieving this season, know that it’s okay to step away from the noise and find your own kind of quiet joy. Whether it’s writing, reading, or just lighting a candle in someone’s memory,

February Musings:

Winter’s been dragging its feet, and so have I. Writing’s taken a bit of a back seat lately—not for lack of ideas, but life has a way of getting in the way. Between grief, real-life chaos, and falling down the rabbit hole of worldbuilding, Okelea has been growing in ways I didn’t expect. The words will come when they’re ready (or when Biano starts yelling at me).

I did manage to finish The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie, though. It reminded me how much I love sharp dialogue, morally grey characters, and the kind of storytelling that doesn’t hold your hand. Definitely the kind of grit I want in Okelea—though maybe with slightly fewer severed limbs.

Spring’s around the corner, and with it, hopefully, some writing momentum. The sap’s rising. Let’s see where it takes me.
